§ Mr. D. Howellasked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation whether he will consider introducing legislation to ensure that motor cycles and similar engine-driven vehicles carry direction indicators so that drivers may be obliged to maintain two-handed control of their machines when cornering.
§ Mr. WatkinsonNo. It is not practicable to require drivers of motor cycles to keep both hands always on the handlebars, and there is no evidence that signalling by hand impairs proper control. In addition, the practical merits of fitting direction indicators to motor cycles are open to question. In the circumstances, I see no ground for making them compulsory on these vehicles, particularly in advance of others.
