HC Deb 17 December 1957 vol 580 c37W
73. Miss Herbison

asked the President of the Board of Trade what control he exercises over the granting of import licences for machinery which has to be paid for in dollars when similar machinery is being produced in this country.

Mr. Vaughan-Morgan

Applications for import licences for machinery paid for in dollars are normally approved only when the Board of Trade is satisfied that the machinery will reduce costs and that no alternative United Kingdom machine offering roughly similar advantages is available.
