HC Deb 17 April 1957 vol 568 cc194-5W
Mr. Brockway

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he has now received a report on the effect of the Zambesi floods within Northern Rhodesia and on Africans from Northern Rhodesia.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

Yes, and I wrote to the hon. Member on 1st April. I have now received a further report from the Governor which indicates that, in addition to the fifteen deaths in the Senanga District of the Barotse Protectorate, unfortunately six people were drowned when a rescue canoe overturned in the Mongu District. I have asked the Governor to convey my deep sympathy to the Paramount Chief. In Mongu and Sesheke districts flooding has upset the harvest. However, good winter crops are expected as a result of the heavy silt deposits from the early and high floods. The power station near Livingstone, which was closed down, resumed output on 26th March.
