HC Deb 29 May 1956 vol 553 cc4-5W
63. Mr. Russell

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what proportion of the total household refuse of Scotland is disposed of by local authorities without any attempts being made to recover valuable materials such as ferrous scrap, paper, glass and textiles; and what steps he is taking to discourage this waste.

Mr. J. Stuart

Statistics on this subject are not available, but valuable materials are known to be recovered from household refuse by local authorities representing at least 70 per cent. of the population of Scotland. Circulars have been issued from time to time to Scottish local authorities asking them to take steps to increase the salvage of iron and steel scrap and tins.
