Mr. Ian Harvey

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will give an estimate of the additional expenditure incurred by the Metropolitan Police Fund in the financial year 1955–56 as a result of the railway strike, and in the financial years 1955–56 and 1956–57 in respect of overtime payments arising out of the reduced police working hours introduced in September, 1955, and in consequence of the recent police pay awards.

In the financial year 1955–56, the additional expenditure incurred by the Metropolitan Police Fund as a result of the railway strike is estimated at £360,000, the cost of overtime in consequence of the introduction of the reduced working hours at £529,000, and the cost of the pay awards at £430,000. In the financial year 1956–57, it is estimated that the cost of overtime in consequence of the reduced working hours will be £1,057,000 and the increased cost of pay £1,523,000.
