HC Deb 12 December 1956 vol 562 c45W
60. Mr. Pitman

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will instruct the United Kingdom representative in the United Nations to move for a resolution recommending any nation which sends delegates to United Nations meetings to accept, in return, the Secretary-General of the United Nations and a small personal staff whenever the General-Secretary expresses the wish to visit that country.

Mr. Ormsby-Gore

Her Majesty's Government consider that visits to member States by the Secretary-General of the United Nations should, in general, be a matter for arrangement between the Secretary-General and the Government concerned. They do not believe anything would be gained by the passage of a resolution in the United Nations recommending member nations to accept the Secretary-General whenever he expresses the wish to visit their country.
