HC Deb 11 December 1956 vol 562 c31W
68. Captain Pilkington

asked the Secretary of State for War to what extent, in view of the psychological effect on people of seeing large lorries driven along roads for no purpose other than teaching men to drive, learner-driver courses have been curtailed in the Army.

Mr. John Hare

As I have already announced, the Army's petrol consumption is being substantially cut. This has led to a reduction of driver training, and we are working out the maximum reduction that can be made in instruction of learner drivers without serious injury to the Army's future mobility.
