HC Deb 02 August 1956 vol 557 c183W
Dr. Bennett

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what arrangements he has made to equip universities and technical colleges with nuclear reactors for research and training purposes as they may be required; and which universities or technical colleges have shown an interest in so equipping themselves.

Mr. H. Brooke

Nuclear reactors are very large and costly installations, and it would not be an economical arrangement for individual universities or technical colleges to have their own. Consideration is being given to the possibility of making arrangements under which members of staff and suitably qualified students from the universities or elsewhere might have access to a reactor to be specially provided for research and training purposes. The universities of Manchester and Liverpool in particular have informed the authorities that they are interested in this possibility.
