HC Deb 12 April 1956 vol 551 cc26-7W
50. Mr. Benn

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what arrangements are made for seeing that films imported into the United Kingdom do not contravene the Cinematograph Films (Animals) Act.

Major Lloyd-George

The method of enforcing the Act is by taking proceedings in the courts against any contravention of it. It is open to any person to institute such proceedings. However, I am informed by the British Board of Film Censors that, before passing a film for public exhibition, they would require the removal of any sequence in which it appeared that an animal had been in any way cruelly treated.
