HC Deb 09 November 1955 vol 545 cc194-5W
85. Mr. Page

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what steps he is taking to fill the vacancies for magistrates in Fiji, having regard to the fact that one vacancy has been open for three years and another for nine months; and whether he will consider increasing the number of magistrates in that Colony in addition to filling those vacancies.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

There are at present two vacancies for magistrates in Fiji. Both date from May of this year, and one of them is due to an increase in the establishment. One is under offer to a serving officer. Endeavours to find a suitable candidate for the other are proceeding both here and in Australia and New Zealand. Any increase in the establishment of magistrates is a matter for the Government of Fiji.
