HC Deb 21 December 1955 vol 547 c327W
66. Mr. J. R. H. Hutchison

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will make clear to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics that no recognition of the East German Government or of their organisation in East Berlin can be agreed to until after German reunification.

Lord John Hope

Her Majesty's Government have made it clear on a number of occasions that they do not recognise the East German régime as a Government, nor the existence of a state in the Soviet Zone. Once reunification has been effected through free all-German elections, in accordance with the principles proposed by Her Majesty's Government, West and East Germany will cease to exist as separate entities.
