HC Deb 21 December 1955 vol 547 c327W
65. Captain Kerby

asked the Minister of Defence if he will indicate the stage reached by the Inter-Service Committee, presided over by Lieut.-General Sir Colin Callander, in their studies of suitable ceremonies to mark the Victoria Cross centenary which falls on 29th January, 1956; what suggestions they have put forward; what outside bodies and persons they have proposed to co-opt to assist them; who are the members of this Inter-Service Committee; and on what date this committee was appointed.

Mr. Selwyn Lloyd

An Inter-Service Committee, under the Chairmanship of the Military Secretary, War Office, and composed of senior officers from the Service Ministries, was set up in September this year to make proposals for the suitable celebration of the centenary of the Victoria Cross. This Committee has now made very considerable progress and agreement in principle has been reached on several of their proposals. As discussions are still proceeding with other interested authorities, including those of the Commonwealth, I am not yet in a position to announce the particular functions suggested by the Committee, but I hope that a full statement on this subject will be made early in the new year.
