HC Deb 24 November 1954 vol 533 c144W
118. Mr. Parker

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will consider raising the retiring age for police officers from 55 to 60 years in view of the shortage of police.

Major Lloyd-George

Except for the more senior ranks, police officers may retire on pension at any time after completing 25 years' service, whatever their age. The relevant regulations prescribe a compulsory retiring age of 55 for the lower ranks, but the chief officer of police, or in borough forces the police authority, has a discretion to allow an officer who so wishes to serve up to the age of 60.
