§ 9. Commander Donaldsonasked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that total imports of fruit from Canada and the United States of America in 1938 amounted to 386,000 tons and that the present ban on such imports has, in consequence, resulted in greater interference with this trade than with any other; and whether, in view of the ill-feeling thus caused in Canada, he will now take steps to arrange to restore this traditional trade during the course of the current year.
Mr. AmoryWe are unfortunately obliged to maintain import licensing restrictions upon many traditional Canadian and United States exports to this country, including fruit, in order to save dollars. We have from time to time relaxed these restrictions, whenever it was possible, but are buying more from North America than we are selling there. I can give no undertaking about the future level of our imports of fruit from that area.
