HC Deb 03 June 1954 vol 528 cc105-6W
65. Mr. Beswick

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether before coming to his recent conclusions with regard to Civil Defence in this country, he had had the opportunity of considering the details of the petition lodged with the United Nations by the trustee territories of the Marshall Islands, regarding alleged injuries sustained by the native peoples following hydrogen bomb tests in the Pacific.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

My attention had not been drawn to this petition before I made my statement on 27th May in answer to my hon. Friend the Member for Harrow, East (Mr. Ian Harvey), but I have now had an opportunity of reading it. As I said then, the technical and organisational problems involved in a system of precautions against danger from radio-activity are being studied. The petition contains no details which contribute towards a solution of these problems.
