HC Deb 03 June 1954 vol 528 c105W
60. Mr. Braine

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what steps he proposes to take to ensure that Civil Defence over a wide area is not jeopardised by the non-co-operative attitude of the Coventry City Council.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

I hope that the statement which I made last Thursday, in answer to a Question by my hon. Friend the Member for Harrow, East (Mr. Ian Harvey), will have made sufficiently clear the views of Her Majesty's Government. Copies of that statement have been sent to all local authorities.

61. Mr. Beswick

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what distance from the centre of Coventry the hydrogen bomb was held to have fallen for the purposes of the recent Civil Defence exercise.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

The actual distance was not specified, but the explosion was deemed to have been near enough to cause severe damage at the centre of Coventry.
