asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what has been the expenditure for improvements and maintenance, respectively, on the section of the Carlisle—Glasgow and the Abington—Cumbernauld trunk roads within the area of the county of Lanark during the last four calendar years; and what is the estimated expenditure in the current year.

On the Carlisle-Glasgow road the expenditure on major improvements in Lanark has amounted to £132,377 in the last four calendar years and the expenditure on maintenance in the same period has amounted to £200,097; the estimated expenditure in the current year is £12,080 on major improvements and £58,244 on maintenance. On the Abington—Cumbernauld road the expenditure on major improvements in the same period has amounted to £46,648 and on maintenance £75,276. No provision is made for major improvements in the current year but £23,828 is estimated to be spent on maintenance.
