HC Deb 12 November 1953 vol 520 c78W
Mr. Lewis

asked the Minister of Labour to publish in HANSARD a table showing the number of industries for which he has responsibility for wage rates under trade or wages boards, Acts and regulations; the average wage rates paid in each instance in 1946; and what the percentage rise in these rates has been from 1946 to the latest date.

Sir W. Monckton

A list of the wages councils established under the Wages Councils Acts, 1945–1948, and the catering wages boards under the Catering Wages Act, 1943, was published on pages 149–150 of the Annual Report of the Ministry of Labour and National Service for 1952 (Cmd. 8893). From that list there should now be deleted the Tobacco Wages Council, which has been abolished, and to it there should be added the two new wages councils, one for England and Wales and the other for Scotland, in the Retail Bread and Flour Confectionery Trade. Sufficient information from which to calculate a reliable average of the wage rates paid in each of the trades covered by these boards and councils and the percentage rise since 1946 is not available.
