asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer his estimate of the reduction that would be possible from January, 1952, onwards in the number of civil servants; and how the actual reduction up to the latest convenient date compares with his estimate.

On 29th January, 1952, I forecast a reduction in the number of civil servants of 10,000 in the first half of that year, to be followed by further reductions in the second half of the year. In the event, a reduction of 10,405 was achieved by 30th June and
