HC Deb 05 March 1953 vol 512 cc59-60W
70. Mr. P. Wells

asked the Minister of Agriculture what assistance will be given to enable flooded allotments to be freed from salt

Sir T. Dugdale

The rate at which soil that has been flooded with sea water can be freed of salt depends primarily upon the amount of fresh water that is subsequently applied to it either by rain or artificial irrigation. Advice by county agricultural executive committees and the National Agricultural Advisory Service on the treatment of such soils is freely available to local education authorities for the benefit of allotment holders. I understand that as a rule it would be most unwise to attempt any cultivation this year.
