HC Deb 04 March 1953 vol 512 cc35-6W
65. Mr. Renton

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty what steps he has taken during 1952, and what steps he will be taking in 1953, in order to reduce substantially the administrative costs of his Department.

Mr. J. P. L. Thomas

When the 1952 Estimates were issued, an appreciable expansion in Admiralty staff numbers to deal with the expanding re-armament programme was expected. By various administrative measures this expansion has been kept to an extremely small figure. Other economy measures which have been taken in 1952 have included such services as official travelling and the use of long-distance telephones. Attempts to achieve further economy both in staff and otherwise will continue in 1953.
