HC Deb 29 July 1953 vol 518 c166W
100. Mr. Rankin

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies why a fee of 150s. is now levied on Aden householders for connecting water supply from the mains to houses when this service was formerly free.

Mr. Lyttelton

A free service of water was formerly provided in Aden at the expense of the general taxpayer but the Aden Government has decided that there is no justification for subsidising the water supply, and that the cost of a direct service should be borne by the individuals who benefit from it. The charges were calculated on the average net cost of connection to the mains.
