§ 65. Mr. Hurd
asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government why he considers that it is necessary to insist on a copper being installed in every case where a grant-in-aid for improvements is approved under the Housing Act, 1949, in view of the fact that some people prefer alternative facilities for washing clothes.
§ Mr. Marples
My right hon. Friend does not insist on coppers being installed. He has the duty under the Act of 1949 to specify the requirements, i.e. the services, amenities and physical conditions, with which a dwelling should conform if it is to earn a grant, but he has also a power of waiver which he is always ready to exercise in appropriate cases.
