HC Deb 16 July 1953 vol 517 c193W
Mr. Russell

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the present annual rate of production of tobacco pipes in Malta; the total quantity exported; the chief destinations of the exports; the potential output if further markets could be found; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lyttelton

Maltese Ministries, within whose jurisdiction such matters lie, have supplied the following information. Present annual production of tobacco pipes is 3,230 gross of finished products, and 3,750 gross and unfinished pipes (i.e. bowls only). The industry employs 60 persons. Export figures for 1952 show that Malta exported smoking requisites to the value of £9,959, all to the United Kingdom, the figure for pipes alone not being stated.
