§ 86. Mr. Harold Daviesasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he is aware of the public concern over the deterioration of British roads; and whether he is prepared to give greater priority to the maintenance, improvement and reconstruction of our national high ways, in view of their economic and strategic importance.
§ Mr. MaudlingWhile it has not been possible in recent years to carry out road improvements on a considerable scale, I am not prepared to accept that there has been any marked deterioration in the condition of British roads as a whole. I do, however, agree that it would be desirable to devote rather more resources to the maintenance, improvement and rconstruction of our national highways as soon as this can be afforded.
