HC Deb 19 February 1953 vol 511 c149W
Sir W. Smithers

asked the Minister of Agriculture why he failed to make adequate provision for food production services in 1952–53, necessitating a supplementary estimate of £2,632,500.

Sir T. Dugdale

This Supplementary Estimate is required mainly to provide for expenditure on the grants under the Agriculture (Calf Subsidies) Act, 1952, which had not been presented to Parliament when the original estimates were prepared. In addition, the response to the schemes under the Agriculture (Ploughing Grants) Act, 1952, has been greater than originally expected. Conditions in the White Fish Industry have also involved larger payments of assistance to inshore and near and middle water fishermen.
