§ Mr. Finlayasked the Minister of Education if she is aware that secondary school children from the new town of Harlow are at present being transported daily to and from schools in Chingford, a total distance of 30 miles; that there is danger of primary school children making similar journeys next winter; and what steps she will take to accelerate the completion of schools in the 1953–54 building programme to avoid this situation.
§ Miss HorsbrughI am aware that this is, unfortunately, necessary in the case of secondary school children. I hope that the early provision of additional temporary accommodation in Harlow will obviate the need for transporting primary school children for more than short distances, if at all. I am satisfied that the local education authority are aware of the urgent need for the new schools to be brought into use, and if there is any help I can usefully give them I shall be very glad to give it.
