HC Deb 15 December 1953 vol 522 cc31-2W
Colonel Gomme-Duncan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the proportion of administrative staff to the total staff of the fire services.

Mr. J. Stuart

At 31st December, 1952, the non-operational staff of the fire service in Scotland (including those employed in stores and workshops) numbered 128. The operational strength was 1,709 whole-time firemen, 2,027 retained firemen and 472 volunteers.

Colonel Gomme-Duncan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the total of hours spent in attendance at fires by the fire services in 1950 to 1952.

Mr. J. Stuart

Between 1950 and 1952 members of local authority fire brigades attended 28,811 fires. The time of attendance varied from a few minutes to many hours, but I regret that information about the total number of hours spent in attendance at fires is not included in the available statistics.

Colonel Gomme-Duncan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the proportion of motor fuel used by the fire services in attending fires in 1951 and 1952 to the total motor fuel consumption of the services; and the total amount in gallons used in each of those years.

Mr. J. Stuart

I regret that the information is not available since no central record is kept of the fuel consumed by the local authority fire brigades.
