HC Deb 29 April 1953 vol 514 c99W
11. Mrs. White

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what steps have been taken recently to improve radio programmes for Africans in Kenya, with a view to stimulating a wider interest in what might become a valuable means of adult education.

Mr. Lyttelton

On the one hand broadcasting to Africans in vernacular languages has recently been increased by six hours to a total of 34¾ hours weekly. "Lunch-time" programmes especially directed to African urban workers have started, and broadcasting staff has been increased. On the other the number of Government-owned sets on loan in suitable centres has been increased to 350 (from 289 in February). A loudspeaker relay system has been installed at Nakuru, and in Nairobi 30 public loudspeakers are installed.
