HC Deb 21 October 1952 vol 505 cc99-100W
123. Mr. Finlay

asked the Secretary of State for War what facilities are in force with the respective Governments of India and Nepal to enable British recruitment to the Brigade of Gurkhas.

Mr. Head

The arrangements with the Government of India permit the transit through India of all ranks of the Brigade of Gurkhas and their families, and the transit of recruits for the Brigade. As stated by my hon. and learned Friend the Under-Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations on 16th October, 1952, the arrangements under which the actual enlistment of recruits at present takes place on Indian territory are under review.

The arrangements with the Government of Nepal permit the employment of Gurkha ex-soldiers to obtain recruits inside Nepal. Her Majesty's Government guarantee the return to their homes of unsuccessful recruits.
