HC Deb 12 November 1952 vol 507 c59W
97. Mr. Erroll

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies why the number of messengers and cleaners in the Directorate of Colonial Surveys increased from 11 in 1951–52, to 16 in 1952–53, 17 part-time, in his Estimates despite the fact that the rest of the staff has decreased from 286 to 278.

Mr. Lyttelton

In June. 1951, the Directorate of Colonial Surveys moved from totally inadequate accommodation in Bushy Park to new premises at Tolworth of nearly double the size. This necessitated additional messenger and cleaning staff.

The reduction in other staff arose from recruitment difficulties which have now, to some extent, been overcome.
