HC Deb 09 December 1952 vol 509 cc34-5W
106. Mr. Janner

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will introduce legislation to amend the Gun Licenser Act, 1870, so that the maximum penalty for carrying a firearm without a licence shall include a prison sentence instead of the present penalty of £10.

Mr. R. A. Butler

No. I think that, having regard to the provisions of the Firearms Act, 1937, which envisage imprisonment in appropriate cases, an Excise penalty of £10 is adequate in respect of a breach of the Act of 1870.
