HC Deb 09 December 1952 vol 509 c33W
Mr. Baker

asked the President of the Board of Trade what quantities of sugar were exported this year; to which countries; what type and quantities of goods were imported in exchange; and in what currencies.

Mr. Mackeson

The quantity of refined sugar exported from the United Kingdom in the period January to October, 1952, was 11,802,270 cwts. The list of countries to which this sugar was sold is too long for circulation in the OFFICIAL REPORT and I am sending it to my hon. Friend; it includes, in order of importance, Pakistan, Malaya and Singapore, Switzerland, Iraq, Western Germany and the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan.

These exports form part of the normal export trade of the United Kingdom which helps to pay for our imports, and there is no question of particular goods being imported in direct exchange.

The last part of the Question does not therefore arise.
