asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the respective strength of the Civil Defence Corps and the Auxiliary Fire Service in the United Kingdom on the most recent date for which he has the figures.

At 31st October, the strength of the Civil Defence Corps and the Auxiliary Fire Service in England and Wales was 159,903 and 10,687 respectively. I have no personal responsibility in this matter elsewhere, but I am informed by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland and by the Government of Northern Ireland that the corresponding figures at the same date were: in Scotland, 10,454 for the Civil Defence Corps and 640 for the Auxiliary Fire Service; in Northern Ireland, 1,406 for the Civil Defence Corps and 448 for the Auxiliary Fire Service.
