HC Deb 22 November 1951 vol 494 c68W
83. Mr. Peter Freeman

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is aware that the standard wages of firemen have been based on that of policemen for over 60 years, and, in view of the recent award to increase the wages of the police by £2 a week, he will also authorise a similar increase to firemen throughout the country, especially in view of the increased cost-of-living since any advancement was made and the long hours of employment.

87. Mr. Fenner Brockway

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will establish equal rates of pay and working conditions for members of the fire brigade service and the police force.

I am not in a position to add anything to the reply which I gave to a Question by my hon. Friend the Member for Sheffield, Heeley (Mr. P. Roberts) on this subject last Thursday.
