HC Deb 15 November 1951 vol 493 cc67-8W
112. Mr. H. Hynd

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department when the remand and detention centres envisaged by the Criminal Justice Act, 1948, will be provided.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

Owing to the restrictions on capital investment it is not possible to provide new building in the immediate future for the purpose of remand and detention centres. Remand centres require new building, and in present circumstances no progress with them can be made. The Prison Commissioners are, however, proposing to set up one or two experimental detention centres in adapted premises and it is hoped that the first may be ready for occupation next spring.
