asked the Minister of Works whether he will take steps to ensure that all portable gas and electric fires are fitted with guards to help reduce their danger to children.

Mr. Eccles:

Guards are included in the specifications for these fires recently published by the British Standards Institution. The Manufacturers' Associations have promised my Department to urge their members to observe the new specifications.
