asked the Minister of Agriculture whether, having regard to the urgent need for increasing home production of beef, he will introduce legislation to extend the payment of subsidy on steer calves for a further period after 30th September, 1951.

No. The calf rearing subsidy was introduced as part of the agriculture expansion programme to give an initial stimulus to the rearing of more calves suitable for beef. It has served that purpose and I do not consider that
