HC Deb 05 February 1951 vol 483 c167W
Mr. Llewellyn

asked the Minister of Food what percentage of meat consumed in South Wales is imported into Cardiff Docks.

Mr. Webb

About 22 per cent. of all the meat issued for the ration in South Wales during 1950 was imported into Cardiff Docks.

Mr. G. Thomas

asked the Minister of Food the number of ships that have been directed by his Department to discharge at Cardiff during the past year; and whether he will attempt to increase this number.

Mr. Webb

One hundred and seventy-six ships carrying imports controlled by my Department discharged at Cardiff last year. Forty-nine of them were deep sea ships and 127 coast-wise ships. We shall continue to do our best to see that Cardiff and the other South Wales ports get a fair share of our traffic, but it should be recognised that I have no compulsory powers of direction over shipping.
