HC Deb 04 December 1951 vol 494 cc234-5W
115. Mr. Wyatt

asked the Secretary of State for War what are the conditions which govern the payment of overseas allowances; and why the situation in Korea does not come within these conditions.

Mr. Head

Local overseas allowance is granted where the total essential expenditure of officers and other ranks at an overseas station is greater than their comparable expenditure in the United Kingdom. There has hitherto been no evidence that officers or other ranks in Korea are involved in higher total expenditure than in the United Kingdom. But, as I said in reply to a Question by my hon. and gallant Friend, the Member for Portsmouth, West (Brigadier Clarke), on 13th November, I am looking into the present position.
