HC Deb 04 December 1951 vol 494 cc206-7W
Mr. M. MacMillan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what the plans are for hydro-electricity supply for the Isle of North Uist.

Mr. J. Stuart

I am informed by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board that the potential water power of North Uist was surveyed some time ago but the results of the survey were not promising. There are, therefore, no plans at present for hydro-electric development in the island. The Board hope, however, to distribute electricity in most of North Uist in due course.

Mr. M. MacMillan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether any new approach has been made to him by Inverness County Council regarding the inadequate and unhygienic water supplies' of North Uist Island; and when it is proposed to bring public water services to this island.

Mr. J. Stuart

There has been no new approach by the county council.

The question of introducing public supplies in North Uist is one for the county council to consider within the limits of their annual allowance for water and drainage works. I am prepared to consider any adjustment they may propose to the programme within these limits to enable the North Uist scheme to be started.
