HC Deb 02 August 1951 vol 491 cc264-5W
Mr. Proctor

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power if he will appoint a committee to advise him upon the possibility of using the material in the various colliery tips, and to advise him and the National Coal Board upon the possibility of having the coal on the colliery tips gathered for public use.

Mr. P. Noel-Baker

I am informed that the National Coal Board have given close attention to the problem of making use of colliery debris. In many cases, the Board find it practicable and economical to manufacture bricks from the debris. They are, moreover, doing all they can to ensure that as little coal as possible goes to waste on colliery tips; but the conditions vary from place to place. I am not sure whether further steps can at present usefully be taken, but I will consider the proposal which my hon. Friend has made.
