Mr. Alport

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many qualified African women teachers are employed in schools of all types in each of the East and Central African territories; and what is the ratio between girl and boy students at the schools in question.

Mr. J. Griffiths,

pursuant to Mr. COOK'S reply of 28th June, 1950 [OFFICIAL REPORT, Vol. 476; c. 2272], gave the following information

The numbers of qualified African women teachers employed in schools of all types are: Kenya, 407; Northern Rhodesia, 225; Nyasaland, 212; Tanganyika, 581; Uganda, 1,026; Zanzibar, 46.

The ratio of boy to girl students in schools of all types is:

Nyasaland 1.6 1
Tanganyika 2.8 1
Uganda 2.8 1
Zanzibar 2.7 1

These ratios are for African students only, except in the case of Zanzibar for which no separate figures for African and Arab students are available.
