HC Deb 04 December 1950 vol 482 cc10-1W
Mr. Perkins

asked the Minister of Transport whether, in view of the increase in weight, amounting to 64 per cent. since 1938, of the traffic using the Exeter—Leeds trunk road, A.38, between Gloucester and Bristol, and the large number of accidents which has taken place on this section of the road, he will consider making a special allocation from the Trunk Road Funds with a view to the construction without delay of a 30-foot carriageway where this is practicable.

Mr. Barnes

I have considered carefully conditions on this length of road. I regret that in present economic circumstances I see no prospect of undertaking in the near future the extensive works of reconstruction which I should otherwise be prepared to consider to deal with the increased traffic, but I propose to put in hand a number of less expensive improvements.
