HC Deb 02 November 1948 vol 457 cc64-5W
Mr. Skinnard

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what practical steps have been taken to implement the proposals of the Swinden Commission for the reform of local government in Mauritius, which were upheld by a Select Committee of the Legislature which reported in December, 1947.

Mr. Creech Jones

On 24th February, 1948, a motion was adopted in the Legislative Council of Mauritius, whereby the Council took note of the Report of the Select Committee of the Council of Government appointed to examine Mr. J. B. Swinden's Report on Local Government. This course was adopted since it was felt that it was proper that consideration of the Report should be deferred until it could be undertaken by the newly constituted Legislative Council, which first met at the beginning of September under the amended Constitution. I am asking the Governor how the matter now stands, and will communicate with my hon. Friend again when I receive the Governor's reply.
