Thomasasked the President of the Board of Trade what reasons led him to seek the withdrawal of the summonses against Shermans Pools, Limited, in respect of alleged breaches of the Paper Control Order; and what expense his Department has incurred from the time inquiries commenced, which led to these proceedings, to the date of their discontinuance.
§ Mr. H. WilsonIn view of the time that has elapsed since the proceedings were instituted owing to the unfortunate death of the learned stipendiary magistrate who was trying this case, and the publicity which had been given to these proceedings, it was felt that substantial justice 237W had already been done and that the additional expenditure of public and private money necessitated by the re-trial was not justified. I am unable to say at present what the cost has been to the Department.
