HC Deb 24 November 1947 vol 444 cc255-6W
Mrs. Manning

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether his attention has been drawn to the performance of an elephant in a circus at Harringay; and, in view of the difficulty of the tricks performed, whether he will inquire into the methods of training employed and satisfy himself that no cruelty to the animal was involved.

Mr. Ede

According to my information no elephant is at present performing at Harringay arena but some elephants are to appear in a circus starting there on 23rd December. I have had inquiries made about some young elephants which are to take part in this performance, and the information available to me is that they are being well treated and that there is no ground to suspect cruelty.
