asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what further information he now has respecting the incidence of corporal punishment in remand homes and approved schools; and whether this shows an increase or otherwise during the past twelve months.

Punishment returns are regularly submitted to my right hon. Friend by all approved schools and remand homes in accordance with statutory rules. The figures show some decrease in corporal punishment over the past twelve months.
