HC Deb 20 November 1947 vol 444 c203W
69. Mr. Peter Freeman

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether his attention has been called to the recent exhibition of a performing elephant in a large store in Birmingham; and whether he is satisfied that the firm is registered as exhibitors of performing animals, and that no cruelty was involved in the training.

Mr. Younger

I understand that the elephant was exhibited in the children's department of a store for two hours daily for one week, that it did not perform and that no training or cruelty was involved in the exhibition. My right hon. Friend's inquiries into the question of registration under the Performing Animals Regulation Act are not yet complete. He will inform my hon. Friend when they are.
