HC Deb 11 November 1947 vol 444 c54W
86. Mr. Lipson

asked the Secretary of State for War how many Service patients there are in military hospitals suffering from mental illness as a result of their war service; and what steps are taken to ensure that their treatment is up to the best standards of civilian hospitals.

Mr. M. Stewart

The number of patients at present in military hospitals suffering from mental illness is 646. It is not possible to say in how many of these cases the condition may be regarded as attributable to war service as a decision on this point is not taken until some time after admission, in many cases not until after discharge. The treatment of Service psychotic patients is well up to the standard of civilian hospitals.
